Accounting for growing startupsProtect your runway. Build the finance function before growth outruns it.
ABFI gives founder-led companies a managed accounting department: bookkeeping, payroll, controller oversight, CPA coordination, and CFO advisory working through one accountable system.
- Payroll aligned
- Bank reconciled
- CPA packet current
Investors ask for numbers the books cannot back up yet.
Burn and runway are guessed from the bank balance, deferred revenue sits in sales, and the board deck is rebuilt by hand each month.
Runway is discussed from a spreadsheet nobody fully trusts
Cash planning is only useful when the underlying books are current, reconciled, and reviewed.
The founder is still the accounting project manager
Questions bounce between the bookkeeper, payroll provider, CPA, and whoever built the forecast.
Month-end happens, but there is no owned close
Reports arrive without a review layer that confirms whether they are ready to drive decisions.
Hiring decisions move faster than financial visibility
Payroll, cash, and operating commitments can change faster than reporting catches up.
Founder Finance Command Center
A monthly operating view should connect cash visibility, close status, payroll alignment, and the handoff into planning.
ABFI’s job is to keep the accounting underneath reliable enough that a view like this can be trusted.
Each close should tell you burn, runway and what changed.
- 01How much cash is actually available after near-term obligations?
- 02Is this month closed and reviewed, or merely recorded?
- 03Does payroll agree to the accounting records?
- 04What does the next 13 weeks look like under a base and conservative case?

See what a Diagnostic finds in a venture-backed software startup.
The central question in this sample: can the founder rely on the books to state burn and runway, report recurring revenue to the board, plan hiring, and prepare for the next raise? Three of the eight findings are specific to startups.
- 02Subscription revenue is recorded when invoiced, not as it is earned$112,000 deferred revenue
- 03Burn and runway are measured from the bank balance, not from complete expenses$19,000 a month
- 04Investor funding and equity records are not tied to the ledger$250,000 SAFE booked as a loan

The work stays specialized. Accountability stays unified.
Each layer has a different job. ABFI coordinates the layers, with one point of accountability through Client Accounting Management, so the owner is not the integrator.
Bookkeeping
Disciplined transaction recording, reconciliations, document organization, and payroll alignment.
ValidationController Review

Built for Startups
- Founder-led companies with recurring accounting complexity, payroll, multiple financial handoffs, and decisions that depend on reliable monthly reporting.
Probably not the fit
- Very early companies that only need a few transactions categorized or want one-off, task-only bookkeeping.
Before you hand over the function.
A few questions leaders usually need answered first.
How is ABFI different from basic bookkeeping for startups?
Bookkeeping is only the first layer. ABFI also reviews and closes each month, reports on it, prepares the CPA handoff and advises on decisions, with one person answerable for all of it.
What is in the startup sample Diagnostic report?
Eight findings on a fictional software company, Illustrative Brightpath Software Inc., including subscription revenue recorded when invoiced instead of when earned, burn and runway measured from the bank balance, and SAFEs recorded two ways. Each finding shows the evidence, the amount involved, the decision it affects and who fixes it, followed by a 90-day roadmap.
Does ABFI prepare tax returns?
No. ABFI does not provide tax preparation or CPA services. Independent CPAs are engaged directly by the client. ABFI supports tax readiness through accurate records, organized documentation, and coordination.
Can ABFI work with the systems we already use?
Usually, yes. We look at your current setup in the first conversation and keep what works. We only suggest a change when a tool is causing errors or extra work.
What if the books are already behind or unreliable?
ABFI provides clean-up and catch-up accounting where needed so ongoing accounting can begin from a reliable foundation.
Who owns communication?
ABFI uses a coordinated structure with a single point of accountability so the owner is not required to integrate multiple disconnected providers.
Get board-ready numbers every month without hiring a finance team.
Bring the current setup. ABFI will help you determine where the gaps are, what should be owned, and whether a managed fractional accounting department is the right structure.
