QuickBooksQuickBooks vs FreshBooks (2026): Which Is Right for Your Business?

QuickBooks Online or FreshBooks? How they compare on invoicing, accounting depth, reporting, inventory, payroll and growth, and which fits freelancers, agencies and growing businesses.

By Umaima WaheedUpdated

The short answer3 min read

FreshBooks is built around invoicing, time tracking and getting paid, which makes it a friendly choice for freelancers, consultants and very small service businesses. QuickBooks Online is a fuller accounting system with deeper reporting, job costing, classes, inventory and a much larger network of accountants and apps. Choose FreshBooks if invoicing is your main job; choose QuickBooks if the business is growing and the books need to do more.

Questions owners ask

Is FreshBooks or QuickBooks better for freelancers?

FreshBooks is often the friendlier choice for freelancers focused on invoicing. QuickBooks suits freelancers whose books are getting more complex or who work closely with an accountant.

Is FreshBooks real accounting software?

Yes, it keeps a general ledger and produces financial statements. Its accounting depth is lighter than QuickBooks Online's.

Can I switch from FreshBooks to QuickBooks?

Yes. Switch at the start of a month or year, bring opening balances and open invoices, and set up the new chart of accounts carefully.

Which is cheaper?

It depends on plan and features. Compare current plans on each provider's site for the features you'd actually use.

Which do accountants prefer?

In the US, more accountants work in QuickBooks Online, which makes outside help easier to find.
